Hanna Cvancara’s dream is to become a nurse in the military, and she has been trying to achieve that dream for more than a decade. But every time she applies, she gets rejected. She can do double the number of push-ups required, and has finished the timed 1.5-mile run with minutes to spare. The issue is that Ms. Cvancara has only one foot and gets around on a prosthetic. So the military will not let her join.

Meneses Maples refers to herself as an adult “glass child,” the sibling of a person with a mental or physical disability. How does a glass child disappear? It is important not to assume what the needs of a glass child are, said Missud, the New York psychotherapist. More than a decade after her TEDx presentation, Meneses Maples receives messages from parents of glass children seeking her advice. Meneses Maples said she hopes to inspire research on glass children by spreading the word through presentations and workshops.

I was heartbroken when I learned that Irene Cara, who starred in the 1980 movie “Fame,” died over the weekend at age 63. Many people seem to like listening to sad music, in part because it’s a stronger trigger for nostalgia than sadness. I always felt like Cara was singing right to me, that she had a window into my emotional experience, which made me feel less alone. I’ve seen the original version of “Fame” a dozen times, always mesmerized by the character Coco, played by Cara. All of which might explain my strong reaction to hearing of Cara’s death even though she was a complete stranger.
Irene Cara, the Oscar-winning musician best known for singing the title tracks to the movies “Fame” and “Flashdance” has died, her publicist said Saturday. “It is with profound sadness that on behalf of her family I announce the passing of Irene Cara,” her publicist Judith A. Moose said in a statement posted to Cara’s website and Twitter feed. “The Academy Award winning actress, singer, songwriter and producer passed away in her Florida home. Her cause of death is currently unknown and will be released when information is available,” she said. She later appeared in films such as “D.C.

I can’t believe I’ve had to write this, let alone release the news,” Judith Moose said in a tweet announcing the singer’s death. “Please share your thoughts and memories of Irene.
